Author Comments – Butsu Zone

Butsu Zone was Hiroyuki Takei’s first full manga serialization in the Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. It was originally based on his award winning stand-alone story (oneshot) of the same name.

Within Weekly Shonen Jump, on the “Table of Contents” page located at the back of the magazine, each author can leave a short comment to their fans. The manga chapters were then later combined into a volume format where Hiroyuki Takei has a spot for additional comments. Both volumes 2 & 3 were published after the manga series had been cancelled in Weekly Shonen Jump. Within the volume releases also included a photo provided by Hiroyuki Takei.

The original oneshot of “Butsu Zone” is also presented with love!
Volume 210/3/97The other day, I was taking a walk in Ueno Park and I bumped into the Story King. He was more composed than Darasa, so he didn’t scold me at first, but he did lectured to me endlessly about manga so I thought to myself, “What does this guy know!?”Ueno Park is a famous park in Japan.

“Story King” was the main character in a short gag manga used to promote up-coming artists.

“Darasa” is in reference to Hiroyuki Takei’s short gag manga, “新人ダーアサやったるで物語” or “The Story of the Newcomer Darasa” which ran in Weekly Shonen Jump prior to Butsu Zone‘s serialization in 1996.
Volume 312/3/97“Saṃsāra Butsu Zone”
There is many words for reincarnation. This concept of the life and death cycle is called Saṃsāra in Sanskrit. Don’t cry Koma. One day you will be reborn again. And then let’s walk that “path” together.
Koma is in reference to the Komainu (lion-dog) from within the manga and who Takei has taken a photo with.
